Exclusive Au Pair agency will advise you the amount each au pair requires (typically this is £65 a week paid directly in cash by you – see below)
Do look at the costs involved before deciding to hire an au pair. Don’t forget that as well as pocket money you will be providing for her you will have another person living in your house 7 days a week. Your food bill will increase, as will lighting, heating and even telephone bills sometimes. It is not reasonable to turn off the heating while you are at work if the au pair is at home all day, most European girls are used to living in apartments where heating is turned on and off at certain times of the year and is included in the rent. We are one of the few countries where a large part of the population live in houses as opposed to flats or apartments, and we control our own heating.

Do enough extra shopping so that when she is at home alone there is always something in the fridge for her to eat. You need to make it clear though that what you intended for the family dinner is not a midday snack. Also, do make sure that the Au Pair has some money to buy the essentials such as milk . If you all go out for a hamburger, or to the ritz for dinner, the host family should pay. This also applies to bus fares and family outings, cinema, swimming and anything else that the au pair goes to in relation to your child. We have come accross a couple of instances where
the girl didnt realise she had to pay for herself, in which case she would have chosen not to go, and the family were suprised when she was upset. One girl, after changing families, was delighted that her family paid for her when she took the children out, as she had been used to paying for herself and her bus fares.
Whatever activities you choose for your children, you must give the au pair enough money to cover everything, plus a little extra for emergencies. Your au pair will be expected to pay her own return fare from her country of origin. The au pair family will be expected to pay for english classes. The weekly pocket money is generally £65, this covers 25 hours a week, also 2 evenings babysitting are included. Anything over and above this amount should be paid as overtime.
